Week in Review

Hey everyone,
We've had an exciting week. To recapitulate, we digitally released the first chapter of Decompositions Vol. 1. It's called Rites of Initiation, 4 songs spanning about 23 minutes. You can listen, download, read the lyrics and please pass it around to your friends, its available here on our bandcamp page.
On Aug 27th, we played our first show since Nov.'07 at the Black Cat in Washington, DC. Hurricane Irene threatened to cancel the show, and did in fact cancel many of the flights, planes, and buses that a lot of you were planning to take to DC. We're sad that some of you couldn't make it after taking the time off from work and school and paying for travel, hotel and tickets. But, luckily, NPR's Lars Gotrich was there recording the whole thing! The entire show is streaming now on NPR's music website. Gnarly.
We are planning a 2 week tour in October, and details are shaping up nicely. So far:
Oct 22nd Harrisonburg, VA @ My Mansion (265 W.Market St)
Oct 23rd Baltimore, MD @ TBA
Oct 24th Philadelphia, PA @ TBA
Oct 25th Blacksburg, VA @ 130 Jackson w/Regents
Oct 26th Greensboro, NC @ Legitimate Business w/pygmylush & systems
Oct 27th Savannah, GA @ TBA w/howler & indian giver
Oct 28th Gainesville, FL @ The FEST 10
And we are adding a few more shows, most likely South Florida, and Atlanta, GA, we'll see...keep updated on our facebook page, or sign up for our mailing list (scroll down this page, its on the right)

The merch store has been updated with a few new items, shirts, tote bags, and 2 new stickers also.

There's a few noteworthy new interviews up this week also. Scene Point Blank asked us to recall our first FEST, it was rough, but I did my best to remember, and also, Drew talks about the writing process of Decompositions Vol.1. Read the interview here.
Lastly, our friend Emily has recently launched an online music magazine called VinylMag.org. She caught us off our guard in the studio late one night this summer, bribed us with the finest warm Yuengling in town, rolled some video and asked us a series of daring questions about the record. The deep, dark depths this interview explores cannot be understated. Be sure to watch the bonus interview with our producer/engineer/bff  Anthony Stubelek of Rockstudio. He is much more informative than we are.
That is all for now. In closing, thank you all for checking out our new music, for coming out to the show(or trying to...) listening, sharing, communicating, and continuing to come back for more. Thanks!

Way Of Ever-Branching Paths

III. Way Of Ever-Branching Paths

"Reality is not always probable, or likely."
-Jorge Luis Borges

At your doorstep
Cloaked in negative space
First frost aches
To lay its claim

At the threshold
Between without and within
First foot prints
Disgrace the virgin soil
Ignoring refusal
Let the winter in
 Indian Summer
Defiant forever
Let winter have its way

Through hollow insides
Made of branching halls
First step falls

Vanishing reasons
I chose this course
Death is in season
Inward to source
INITIATION
Vanishing reasons
I chose this course
DISINTEGRATION
Death is in Season
Step inside...
One thousand faces
Stare back from their fractured origin

In turn,
 Turn another corner
And lose my place
A blue-print for disorder
The Way of Disarray

Backward glare
Burnished obsidian walls
Reflect the endings
That will never...

Unfold,
Fold the corners over
To hold my place
The panic feels so familiar
In a breath-work maze

Clear the air
Ceremonial smoke rings
 Fill the creases
Where the trauma collects

You better keep your thought forms clean
How we, the Conjured, seek
To breach the compass of this dream

Tangental slipstreams
Derail our train of thought
Stationed in fog
Composing
Decompositions
In constant revision
Infinite indecision
Encaged
Within a finite space

Help me hide it away
Under thin coats of cracking paint
Under smothering sound-scapes
Where every layer I've made
Competes for a place

Enchanting parlor tricks
And slights of hand
Made me a god
Here in obscurity
Confined to making believe

So help me wish it away...
But how long,
 How long
Before I'd beg to bring it back into life?
To bring it into the blue grey
The Grey matters
Matters of the Maker

Mark and Measure
Locus of control
Order, theorized
Crooked, our belief
In the straight line

Leave room for failure
One fatal mistake
 That human touch
Planning its own obsolescence

The scent of senescence
Permeates
So much potential
Fated to fade
Our monuments
Willing their own expiration

Ground to powder
Chaos, improvised
Stolen fire
Blessed are the thieves
In these End Times

Distill it down into a single line
Meet the demands of the mountainside
Compromise is such a loaded word
When landslides are singing

Hermetic melodies
Only we could hear
  We clutch the chords
Forgotten anthems reappear

Encoded messages
Only we could speak
In native tongues
Ancient strains have gone to seed

Entangled crossroads
Only we could see
Beyond the fear
Our new creation will be gleaned

From the wastelands
Of the insincere
Winged beauty she looms
Within a derelict cocoon

Inspiration strikes
Under flashing flood lights
Winged beauty emerge
To search this tortured world for new growth
  Resurface, Recreate, and Redeem

Shades
Of night
Blossoming
Within

These Laced
Pathways
Of Hekate's
Garden

Retrace
Mind streams
Following
Her lead

Wellsprings
Whispering

The Rites of
INITIATION
I chose this course
DISINTEGRATION
Inward to source
PREVERBERATIONS
Follow the stations
Through branching halls
ANNIHILATION
Fever breaks my fall

Dionysus, good heavens
You've gone to pieces
In search of closure, you went within...
Everything and Nothing
Clashed
In counter movements,
Rotating spins-
A dream,
A dream
And nothing more.

Chart the startling curves
Of your dementia
(No way out)
Map the staggering depths
Of one dimension
(No way out)
Like clockwork witchcraft
One must suffer to pass
Suffer to Pass
Like clockwork witchcraft
My dreams now abandon me
Suffer To Pass

In time, you'll add my shadow
To your overspilling urn
And match my every move
Step for step, turn for turn

Reclaimed by a destiny I revoked
A trajectory, resigned
Writhing
In surrender
Storm clouds gather in this altered state

Hard-wired
To the recklessness of perception
Bathed in artificial light
Steeped in fabricated time
Storm clouds gather in this altered state

Ever-spinning,
The Great Wheel:
Void of progress

Ever-Branching,
The Great Work:
Grieve the dying
Dying art
Art of process

Tunnel visions
Wander without aim
Through the Gauntlet

Spirit Guides,
Forward Exits-
Disembodied nights
Shrouded in war paint
Losing mind
To behold...
The Other Side
TAKE HOLD.

New EP on August 23rd! "Rites of Initiation", the First Chapter of Decompositions Volume 1

“Seven years after the release of their heralded debut, As the Roots Undo, experimental cult rock heroes Circle Takes the Square have announced plans to release their second full-length album, Decompositions: Volume I, in November via their own Gatepost Recordings.

Recorded/Mixed/Mastered by Anthony Stubelek at Rockstudio in Brunswick, GA, Decompositions: Volume I is a collection of songs, comprised of three central musical narratives. Each composition maintains its own identity and story arc, while also playing an integral role in the overarching plot line that will unfold throughout the Decompositions series. Given the self-contained nature of each individual passage, CTTS will be unleashing the complete first chapter from Decompositions: Volume I, entitled Rites of Initiation, as a digital EP on August 23 on their bandcamp page in advance of the full album’s release in November.

Rites of Initiation finds CTTS breaking into new territories, from the crushingly primitive to the technically transcendent, from stripped down metallic riffs to harmony embellished, eerie folk passages, all within a framework consistent with their trademark discordant and experimental approach to high speed, outside the box punk/hardcore.

“We have spent vast amounts of time exploring every fractal peak and recursive valley in the landscape that these songs describe, and we are eager to provide our listeners with the opportunity to glimpse a portion of this realm, and to immerse themselves in the labyrinth of startling curves and staggering depths that we’ve been lost within for so long,” says co-vocalist/guitarist Drew Speziale. “Rites of Initiation documents the ill-lit, inward-leading, forever-winding pathways that eventually take hold, on a search for the authentic in an increasingly artificial world. When the boundaries between thinking and knowing, dreaming and waking, living and dying all begin to blur, a terrifyingly primal vision begins to bleed through the fragile veil of consensus perception. To surrender to it, embracing the other side is our “rite of passage.” We’ve crafted these songs in an attempt to sing that Transition into being.”

Rites of Initiation is CTTS’ first recorded music since their debut album, As the Roots Undo, which was released in 2004, and gives fans a peak at what’s to come on the long awaited follow-up Decompositions: Volume I.”

Our first live show in over 3 years! AUG 27th at the Black Cat in DC.

Hey guys and ladies,
When Pageninetynine asked us to join them on their 2nd reunion show, weren't exactly ready to play a show yet, especially one this big and badass, we were hoping to ease back into touring with a low key house show here, a VA hall there, to get our groove back. But ultimately we thought uh, its pg.99, and Thou. We have to make it happen.
So, fuckitletsrock!
We'll be unearthing some songs from our demo, a song or both from the split 7", some ATRU classic hits, and some new songs as well. If you can make it out, we'd love to see you. If you are one of the many traveling from far away lands, please be safe. We're very much looking forward to our first show back. Coincidentally, the last show we played was with Thou in New Orleans, Nov. 2007. The circle continues...

First off, we want to offer our sincere gratitude to everyone who has been donating to our Kickstarter Project. The support you have offered us is overwhelming, and will allow us to properly finish the recordings and tie our album together with some pretty fun packaging, as well! If you haven't already checked it out, there's still a few days left to donate, and we've still got some exclusive T-shirts available, so get the details HERE.

Above is a video blog from our most recent recording sessions. Things are coming together beautifully- guitars have been finished; bass and vocals are in the works and nearing completion. Please continue to check our Facebook page for ongoing updates!

2-21-11

Greetings! It's a fine monday afternoon here in Brunswick, GA, with plenty of sunshine and a lovely breeze to greet us whenever we are able to briefly step out of the cave (which isn't very often). We enjoyed a visit from our cello playing comrade, Lydia, on Sunday, and are thoroughly enjoying her contributions to our little project... Meanwhile, guitar tracking is underway. These songs are beginning to live and breathe on their own now and we can barely wait for their eventual release into the wild.... we've just about mapped all of the Forking Paths, and guitars for Spirit Narrative appear to be in the bag, so things are looking up(side down).

2-19-11

One month later, and we're back in the Rockstudio (Of Ever-Branching Paths) for another session to finish up some guitars, lay out some vocal basics and build layer upon layer upon... etc until sonic suffocation is achieved. We'll put up another video soon, and will get back in the cycle of frequent studio updates throughout the coming days...
Exciting announcements about the release will be unveiled in the not so distant future as well, so all you honey badgers out there, just keep your ears to the ground...

Signed,
(The) CIRCLE

1-19-11

As of January 19th, we've finished up our first two-week session at Rockstudio, and have currently returned to our respective habitats (not to be mistaken with the "Rabit-at for Drew-manity") to evaluate the fruits of our labor thus far and to prepare for our upcoming sessions in February. The seven tracks that we're working on now are coming to life in a beautiful way, and we're beyond eager to get back to work in the studio for the final, celebratory stages of what's been a lengthy and at times very challenging process. We'll continue the video blogs when tracking recommences, and in the meantime, check in with us for occasional updates and miscellany....

Thanks for checking in and enjoy the last few days in the threshold of this new year.

P.S. Check the sidebar for links to our Twitter, Facebook and Myspace pages, which we'll continue to update as well.

Elevens are in full effect today, as we work through some "tech-no-logic-kill" difficulties and continue to lay down some vicious guitar tracks. Here's some pictorial evidence for you skeptical types to sink your teeth into, and for you true believers to add some support to your precarious convictions.
Enjoy this date's binary symmetry while it lasts.

Caleb's a fucking hero. Today he cranked out the last of the drum parts, percussion and some vocal tracks in an epic 14 hour studio stint. All of his takes were completely stellar and now we're shifting gears and will be digging into some guitar tones tomorrow. Kathy finally woke up from her epic nap and crafted this latest video installment to keep you folks in the know. Remember to keep checking in and BY ALL MEANS keep an eye out for the shadow falcons...

1-6-11

As of this morning, Caleb is about 1.5 songs away from completing his drum tracking. Morale is high here at the Compound del Circle, and Anthony is about to hit record as we start to make another day's worth of noise.
Here's another view from inside the heart of Nowhere:

1/5/11

Two new tracks worth of drumming have been etched into digital stone. They are titled: "Prefaced by the Signal Fires..." and "...Arrowhead as Epilogue" and they make up half of a four movement composition called TOTEM : POLARIS. There are roughly two more days of tracking drums on the horizon as we wrap this one up and then tackle the last track in this collection, called "North Star, Inverted." We're thoroughly enjoying our time at Rockstudio, embracing the whirlwind of late nights and early starts in the process of singing this new world into being.
Thanks so much for all of your comments of support and for your continued enthusiasm!

Day three in the studio, and the results have been tremendous so far. Drum tracking continues, as well as some rehearsing and a bit of preliminary prepping for recording guitars and bass - including biasing the ol' Marshall JCM 800 (as featured in today's video). Caleb finished his parts for the last movement of a somewhat lengthy three-parter tonight, and will start on a four movement track tomorrow. Lots of work ahead but plenty of milestones have been passed on our journey thus far. Thanks, as always, for checking in.
More daily updates to follow...

In Loving Memory

We miss you Bobby.

DECOMPOSITIONS recording sessions have begun. On the 1st day of January, 2011 we convened in Georgia, hailing from various locations across the map, at our old haunt: the Rockstudio. Today we began crafting Part I of this collection of new songs with our longtime friend and collaborator, Anthony Stubelek. We had a fruitful first day, as documented in the above montage of moving pictures, and completed tracking drums for two songs. We'll continue to update this blog daily over the next couple of weeks, as our sessions continue and as plans for the release evolve. Thanks to everyone who has been keeping tabs on CTTS through dry spells and downpours alike. We can not wait to share these songs with you.
